How to measure home power before buying a miner

Most first-time buyers start with marketplace listings. We start with the breaker panel. A home crypto mining setup only works if the circuit can carry a continuous load with margin for heat and other appliances that share the same path.

Read the panel safely

Open the cover only if you are comfortable doing so, or photograph it with the door open while the main stays untouched. Note amperage labels on candidate breakers and which rooms they feed. If labels are missing, map outlets by switching breakers one at a time with a lamp — never guess during a purchase rush.

Think in continuous watts

Mining hardware can sit near peak draw for hours. Treat published wattage as a floor, then leave headroom for the power supply’s inefficiency and for other devices on the same circuit. In workshops we often sketch a simple table: device watts × 1.2, then compare against 80% of the breaker’s rated capacity.

What to bring to class

Clear photos of the panel, the intended room, and any extension cords already in use. Write down whether the space shares a circuit with a kitchen, heater, or workshop tools. Those notes turn a generic shopping list into a plan that fits your walls.
