Choosing a first power supply for a home rig
The power supply is the quiet fulcrum of a safe home crypto mining build. Undersized or counterfeit units show up often in used listings, and they fail in ways that risk more than downtime.
Size for headroom
Add the expected load of cards, board, and fans, then choose a reputable unit with clear margin. Running a PSU near its limit for weeks raises heat and shortens life. In the equipment clinic we prefer boring, well-reviewed models over exotic high-wattage shells with thin documentation.
Inspect cables and connectors
Look for proper gauge, intact strain relief, and connectors that seat fully. Avoid daisy-chained adapters that concentrate heat. If a listing cannot show clear photos of the label and cables, walk away — another unit will appear.
Used-market caution
